Closing Date: 18 June 2024 The Role This is an exciting opportunity for three clinical teaching fellows to join the team in Malaysia delivering education to medical students at NUMed. To be eligible you need to be a medical practitioner who is registered with one or both of the GMC (General Medical Council) or the MMC (Malaysian Medical Council), and have either a minimum of three years post-first degree qualification experience, or have two years’ experience and successful completion of a Master’s degree. In practice this means that by August 2024 you must have completed the UK Foundation programme (or equivalent) plus have completed at least one additional year of post graduate experience; or have completed the UK Foundation programme (or equivalent) and have successfully completed a Master’s degree; or have completed the UK Foundation programme (or equivalent), have completed at least one additional year of post graduate experience and have successfully completed a Master’s degree. You need to wish to develop expertise in undergraduate medical teaching in an international setting. The post will be hosted by Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia on their campus and at associated clinical facilities within Johor, Malaysia as part of the clinical teaching faculty of NUMed. You will mainly be teaching clinical knowledge and skills on campus and associated clinical teaching facilities, with some opportunity for development of teaching and learning activities and resources. You will be expected to provide learning support, pastoral care and academic mentoring to students, and to use your subject expertise to contribute more widely to the school’s teaching activities. You will not be required to work clinically during your time in Malaysia. You will be supported in your move to Malaysia. NUMed will help support you in your visa application, flight reimbursements, airport transfer and hotel accommodation for 2 weeks. You will undergo a comprehensive health check in Malaysia ahead of receiving health insurance for the duration of your stay. Once in Malaysia, you will be able to travel to Singapore as often as you wish. You can choose whether to take the clinical teaching fellow posts for one or two years. Malaysian visa rules require that at the start of the post (August 2024) you either have a minimum of three years post-first degree qualification experience, or have two years’ experience and successful completion of a Master’s degree. Key Accountabilities To provide the Clinical Teaching Fellow with experience and academic training in developing and delivering clinical teaching, To deliver excellent teaching to undergraduate medical students at NUMed Malaysia within the campus and associated clinical facilities throughout Johor, Malaysia. Teaching The successful applicants will be part of a team of clinical teaching fellows who make an important contribution to developing, coordinating and delivering the undergraduate teaching programme at NUMed, The posts will provide teaching to undergraduate medical students on campus and within associated clinical facilities throughout Johor, Malaysia for NUMed Malaysia. There are currently around 800 students enrolled in total, with an intake of approximately 140-150 medical students per year, You would predominantly teach small groups in the classroom or clinical skills room, as well as providing pastoral support and academic mentoring to students, You would be expected to develop personal teaching and educational skills. Additional Opportunities You can work towards fellowship / senior fellowship of the AdvanceHE which would be fully funded, You can undertake the Newcastle University Postgraduate Certificate of Medical Education during this period. If you already have this qualification (or equivalent), you may be able to undertake another Newcastle University PG certificate subject to NUMed approval, There is also the potential to carry out small-scale research and audit projects in the field of medical education, public health, healthcare management etc, by local negotiation and subject to ethical approvals once in Malaysia. Remuneration Salary scale This will be as appropriate to the level of the post-holder on the NUMed salary scale (Year 1) and will be RM 8084.57, or RM 9094.05 per month (the latter for candidates with MRCP, MRCOG, MRCPCH qualifications or equivalent), In addition, the terms and conditions include a return economy class flight from the UK (to be reimbursed by NUMed), a general allowance (RM 1633.33) accommodation allowance (RM878.17), and a supplemental allowance (RM3936.75).
